Question from Tabitha : “My name is Tabitha I am contacting you in regards for my dad. He said he saw an ad in a paper about free boar hunting due to over population. I can’t seem to find what he is talking about or what he saw any where so I thought maybe if I contact you you might know what he is talking about or what ad he might have seen.”

Answer : “Your father is half right: there is indeed a problem with boar overpopulation but I don’t think that you can hunt for free. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources recommends that all deer hunters should hunt some of the boars in order to reduce the growing population which has become a real problem. In order to hunt boars you will need a deer hunting license.”

Question from Clay : “Hello my name is Clay, and I have been feeding some hogs but haven’t seen them recently. They are feeding on my plot at night or early morning before daylight. How can I get them to feed in daylight hours? They are feeding every night about 25# of corn a night and they return every night to feed. Please help.”

Answer : “Hello Clay. We don’t think that you can make them come in daylight hours and eat because this is how they are. Hogs are known to go out for food during the night. They only go out for food during the day if the weather is cold or if it is a rainy day.”

    250 grain Barnes Xpander MZ
    300 grain Barnes Xpander MZ
    300 gr. T/C XTP 50/45

From Kwassie, Marromeu, Mozambique : “Hi. Please could tell me what is the best bait I can use for luring wild pigs here in the african bush. At the moment I am using dried corn mixed with husks and molasses. I have been baiting this area for over a month, they came 1 night and never again.
What am I doing wrong? I know they are around the area, what bait can I use to lure them to my site everyday.”

Answer : “Hello Kwassie. A sodium fluoroacetate (1080) poison bait is an effective control measure. When used as part of a properly planned and coordinated baiting programme, baiting can be an effective feral pig control measure.

Bait preferences can vary from area to area. Current diet will sometimes determine how readily the pigs will accept an alternative food.

    • Pigs will be more attracted to bait with a strong odor.
    • Bait can include grain, or fermented grain (eg. wheat, oats, barley or triticale that has been soaked in water with molasses added), commercial pig or poultry pellets, vegetables and fruit.
    • Feeding meat or carcasses to feral pigs for the purposes of control may be illegal in some jurisdictions.
    • Large amounts of bait will be required; around 10-20 kg each time the trap is set.”

Question from Chuck Wade, Texas : “When hogs consume this corn/diesel mixture, does it affect the meat in any way? Is it safe to eat? Thanks, Chuck”

Answer : “Hello Chuck. Tests of the meat from hogs exposed to the tainted feed confirm that melamine and its compounds do not accumulate in pork- they are filtered out of the body by the kidneys. Hogs known to have eaten this feed appear healthy, which will be confirmed as these animals undergo the rigorous inspection that USDA provides for all meat and poultry prior to processing.

Consulting a veterinarian is a must after hunting a wild boar. He will tell you if it is safe to eat the meat or not, in most cases you will be safe but of course there are some exceptions.”
