Wild Boar Trapping

Most of you know that the wild boar is one of the most destructive animal to a ranch or a farm land in the world. Due to the fact that they reproduce quite rapidly, getting rid of them is a delicate thing to do. Trophy deer and game ranches routinely lose expensive feed to the maurading feral pigs. If you haven’t trapped wild boars before we strongly advise you to exercise great care around them as they usually turn out to be quite nasty. For safety reasons have someone well-versed in trapping boars inspect your trap. We recommend that you first go and see other experienced hunters trapping wild boars and learn from their experience as it isn’t a very easy thing to do. As far as trapping techniques are concerned, you will need the following materials: hog bait - corn or other; a bucket to place the bait inside, a prop for the door - a 1 “x2″ piece of wood will work just fine and a rope, preferably a clothesline rope.

The very first thing you must do is to place the trap in an area that you have found wild boar signs. For the first week you must tie the door open and bait both the inside and outside of the trap as this gets the wild boars accustomed to feeding in and around the area of the trap, and being crowded in the trap. This is totally necessary as your scent will cover the trap and I’m sure you know that these animals have a very acute sense of smell so they need time to get used to the new structure.

The trap should be placed only when the boars have found and fed inside the trap. You must set the door by placing the above mentioned piece of wood between the door jamb and the door. Now, tie the rope to the piece of wood and string through the top of the frame towards the back. It is now time to drop the rope through the frame and tie it to your bucket filled with bait. Be aware of the fact that the rope should have very little shack in it with the bucket located on the trap’s floor. When the wild boar will begin to feed and will knock the bucket over the rope, it will pull the prop from the door. You may end up with more than one wild boar if your spring is not to stiff as other boars will enter the trap in order to feed.

Many wild boar trappers sour their corn first. To do so you must fill a bucket of corn with water and let it sit for a few days, you will know when it is sour. If by any chance you are having problems getting the trap’s trigger to go off, you might as well put the bucket on top of a cinder block, inside the trap. By doing so, it will give the bucket farther to fall and most likely, it will trip the trigger easier.

If you are having problems with the trigger tripping to easily it may be because the animals are too wide to fit inside the trap or your spring doesn’t have enough tension to hold the prop tight enough. If you find yourself in such a situation, we recommend that you use a longer prop to increase the tension on the trap’s spring. Make sure that you check the trap every morning as these animals usually feed during the night hours. Be very attentive when you approach the trap as these animals have the tendency to become very angry and dangerous.
